Tomer Malik: Scouting the Next Disruptive Technology at Direct Lab

Meet Tomer Malik our Innovation Analyst at Direct Lab.

Tomer, tell us about your work at Direct Lab

Every day, I’m on a quest to uncover startups with transformative potential – it’s like being a detective and a matchmaker rolled into one. I search for companies that can drive innovation not just in our insurance policies but across all business departments. That’s why I don’t limit my scope to InsurTech alone; I seek out game-changers in HRTech, Data, AI, and beyond. And we’re not bound by a single stage – whether a startup is in seed, growth, or even IPO, if it has the potential to make a real impact, we’re all in.

I lead scouting efforts to identify startups that bring strategic value, and I manage the entire deal flow process – from initial outreach to forging lasting relationships.

I conduct rigorous due diligence and recommend breakthrough investment opportunities through our company’s investment arm. Alongside our Business Development Manager, I help shape partnerships and collaborative strategies that bridge the gap between innovative startups and our corporate world.
Every day at Direct Lab is an adventure, and I’m excited to continue pushing boundaries and making an impact in the world of innovation.

What are the challenges you are facing these days?

Innovation isn’t just about great ideas – it’s about execution. Right now, one of the biggest challenges is making sure that the startups we engage with don’t just bring exciting concepts but can actually integrate with our ecosystem and create real impact. Startups move fast, corporates move carefully – finding the balance between these two worlds is a constant challenge.

How does your experience help you solve them?

Coming from the Entrepreneurship world and now working in corporate innovation I’ve seen the highs and lows of early-stage startups. I know what it’s like to chase an idea, pivot, and face hard truths. That experience helps me ask the right questions—both to startups and within our team—to make sure we focus on real, scalable solutions. I also understand what corporates look for behind the scenes, which allows me to guide startups in navigating the complexities of working with a large company.

Where do you see Direct Lab 5 years from now?

Direct Lab isn’t just about innovation – it’s about setting new industry standards. In five years, I see us as a key player in shaping the next-gen insurance landscape – from embedded insurance to AI-agent claims processing. More than just scouting startups, we’ll be a launchpad for pilots, partnerships, and even in-house ventures that redefine what insurance can be.

On a more personal note, tell us something no one knows about you.

If you ever need a restaurant recommendation, a new recipe, or the perfect cut of meat, I’m your guy. My love for food runs deep, and it’s no surprise why. My dad owns a butcher shop, and every Friday, you’ll find me there, hands-on, helping him prep for the weekend rush.
